Vincent Albano Playground is at the NW corner of Second Avenue and 29th Street
The Friends of Vincent F. Albano Park and Mary Collins Playscape have been transforming the once derelict playground into a beautiful place for children to play. For the last 7 years, a very dedicated group of parents adopted the park and, with extraordinary dedication and talent, planted perennials, annuals, and thousands of bulbs each year. Now even the science teachers from PS 116 bring their classes of youngsters.
The Kips Bay Neighborhood Association has been an integral partner with the Friends of Albano non-profit. We pushed to raise money from former Council Member, Rosie Mendez, who ultimately earmarked $800,000. for the renovation of the playground and park area. The Association worked with Friends and NYC Parks staff during scoping meetings and design approval in 2017. The playground will have a new playset, a water feature, running track, and new landscape plantings and hardscape.
As all good City projects go, there is an agency snag!
We discovered the site, on which the Park is built, is owned by the MTA. It was earmarked to be part of the Robert Moses’ cross town highway project back in the day. We do understand that the MTA has informally given Parks the ok to renovate, however, we are still waiting for the formal paperwork. We are working with our electeds, Brad Holyman, NYS Senator and Harvey Epstein, NYS Assemblyman to give the MTA the final push for the green light!
